Five things you should never paste into a chatbot, even by accident
It feels private. It isn't.
What you type into a chatbot is stored on the company’s servers and may train future models. To switch training off: ChatGPT, Settings → Data Controls → Improve the model for everyone; Claude, Settings → Privacy → Help improve Claude; Gemini, turn off Keep Activity.
Passwords and one-time codes
Never paste a password, PIN, or a two-factor code into a chat, even to ask why it isn't working. Anyone who ever gets into your chatbot account can scroll back and read it, and staff can review chats during abuse investigations.
Your full SSN or ID number
A Social Security number is the key piece identity thieves need to open accounts in your name, and license or passport numbers help them too. Need help with a form? Replace the number with XXX before you paste it.
Full card or account numbers
Chatbots can help you understand a confusing bank statement, but they don't need the full card or account number to do it. Cover or crop those digits out of a screenshot before you upload it, the same way you would for a stranger.
Client contracts or confidential docs
Pasting a client contract or internal strategy doc into a personal chatbot account can break your company's confidentiality agreement, even if you're only asking for a summary. Check your employer's AI policy first, or use a business-tier tool your IT team approved.
Photos of your ID or mail
A photo of your driver’s license hands over your face, name, birth date, address and license number in one image, and an envelope still gives away your name and address. Type out just the detail you need help with instead.
The rule of thumb
Before you paste anything, ask: would I read this out loud in a crowded coffee shop? If not, describe it instead. A temporary chat (ChatGPT, Gemini) or incognito chat (Claude) skips training, but is still kept a while for safety checks.
